Nagzira National Park

Nagzira National park is situated in the Gondia district of Maharastra. The wildlife sanctuary has a picturesque landscape and luxuriant vegetation. Nagzira is home to many endangered species. This sanctuary is notable for its wealth of birds and is a bird watcher’s paradise.

Avi – Fauna

Over 166 species of Avifauna have been sighted in Nagzira national park. Also as many as 15 species of migratory birds are reported. One remarkable bird, “Bar-headed Goose” which is a winter migrant from Ladakh and Tibet inhabits Chorkhamara tank located adjoining the sanctuary.

Climate

The sanctuary is open for visitors from October 1st to June 30th. It is closed during the monsoon. The average annual rainfall is about 1,100-1,500 mm. The summer temperature maximum may rise to 45 º C and the winter temperature minimum may drop to about 6.5 º C. February to May is the best time to visit.



Flora

The vegetation is diverse ranging from dry mixed forests to moist forest. The forest type is Southern Tropical dry deciduous forests. The major flora in includes tree species, small trees, shrubs, herbs, grasses and a few under-shrubs. Major trees are Ain, Dhavda, Bija, Garari, Tinsa, Tendu and Surya. Teak grows sparsely while Bamboos grow plentifully.

Fauna

There are more than 34 – species of mammal found in the sanctuary such as are Tiger, Panther, Jungle Cat, Small Indian Civet, Palm Civet, wolf, Jackal, Sloth Bear, Ratel, Common Giant Flying Squirrel, Gaur, Four Horned Antelope, Mouse Deer, Pangolin.
It houses about 36 species of reptiles out of which about 6 species are of endangered status namely Indian Rock Python, Dhaman, Indian Cobra, Russel’s Viper, Checkered Keelback and Common Monitor.

It also has a lot of interesting varieties of amphibian, like frogs and toads. These are Tree-frog, Bull-frog, Six-toed frog, an uncommon toad; Ramanella montana etc.

There are many varieties of fresh water fishes in the Nagzira lake and the other water-bodies around this sanctuary.
